Orthodontics is the first specialized in dentistry which involves study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity and/or disproportionate jaw relationships

In Interceptive Orthodontics, simple measures are undertaken to eliminate developing malocclusions (crowding of teeth, jaw discrepancies, spacing of teeth, narrow jaws ,displacement of teeth etc., teeth which are not erupting etc.). The goal of Interceptive Orthodontist to treat the above problems when no active movement of the teeth should be done which is usually between the age of 6 & 12 years.

The age between 6 & 12 years is a very delicate time for the child because in all 20 milk (deciduous ) teeth fall(shed) and 28 permanent teeth usually erupt in this time from 6 to 12 years. In the scope of Interceptive Orthodontics treatment the following is possible :

1. To correct developing problems like lip biting, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting etc.

2. To treat spacing, crowding and mal positioning of teeth.

3. To help expansion of jaws.

4. To restrict growth of jaws where possible and necessary

5. To improper correct bite relationships like deep bite, open bite, cross bite etc

Myofunctional appliances

Definition : A device that alters a patient’s functional environment in an attempt to influence and permanently change the surrounding hard tissue.

In simple terms and language these appliances use forces generated by muscles of face, soft tissue etc. and or surrounding of teeth to give the child a better growth harmony of the jaws so that the teeth and face bring about a good smile.

These appliances can be removable or fixed depending the treatment required. Thus we can use these appliances to stimulate the growth of jaws ( case study) so as to bring about a good smile which may be not possible after the age of 12 when the growth of the child may become slow or even it may stop at 12 years .
